violin and percussion
5'
A musical exploration of the feeling of procrastination for violin solo, crotales and bass drum. The violin is stuck playing a fifth, which is pure in sound, but could also be described as an empty vessel. All attempts to fill the fifth get blocked by the bass drum. The crotales constantly change between two notes that complement the fifth to a major and minor triad respectively. The associated sensations of major as (positive, optimistic) and minor (dark, pessimistic) are used to express this sense of ‘stuckness’ created by procrastination. The performers are attempt to find an escape through a gesture that indicates a loud sound, only to procrastinate in the last moment letting go of the generated energy.
Composed in 2015 for the United Instrument of Lucilin, Luxemburg. Premiered at Neimenster in Luxemburg.
